Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3 Review

Are you searching for a speaker that has awesome sound quality and is affordable? In 2018, the Megaboom 3 was launched as an upgrade to the Megaboom. It came with new features, a whole new design, and a price tag that will not force you into bankruptcy. Today, we will be going over some of these features and whether the Megaboom 3 is the speaker for you.

UE Megaboom 3 Sound Quality

In terms of volume, the Megaboom 3 can produce a great deal of sound. It has enough volume to fill a large room with consistent production. However, it comes up short when dealing with songs that have a lot of loud bass. Songs with a lot of bass are known to sound punchy and distorted at maximum volumes, the speaker tends to lower the volume when there is a large kick of bass because it likely cannot handle the sound density.

Songs that rely less on bass sound much better in the Megaboom 3. The sound produced has power, clarity, and prioritizes certain parts (like the vocals) over others. The approximate max volume on the speaker is 100 decibels, but at that volume, the sound is likely to be distorted. Overall, the sound is up to date with modern speakers and is a great transition from the Megaboom.

UE Megaboom 3 Design

The Megaboom 3 weighs in at 2 pounds and is in the shape of an 8.9 x 3.4-inch cylinder. On the side of the cylinder are two large buttons for increasing or decreasing the volume from the speaker. On the top of the speaker, there is a power button for turning the speaker on and off and a Bluetooth button for pairing the speaker to a device.

In addition, there is a magic button that is used for launching playlists which can be programmed by the user, pausing or playing songs, and skipping songs. The Megaboom 3 also has a new fabric wrap all along the sides. This wrap makes the speaker extremely durable, with the ability to withstand a meter tall drop and because it is heavier than Boom 3, the two can’t go on the same deep.

UE Megaboom 3 Power

The Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3 has an outstanding power life of 20 hours which is an increase from the previous 15-hour lifespan. There are two different ways you can charge the speaker. First, you can use the USB charger that comes with the speaker. Simply open the slot, plug in the chord, and connect the chord to an outlet to start charging. The second way to charge the speaker is to use the charging dock accessory which can be bought for $40.

You must connect the dock to a wall outlet using the USB and place the speaker onto the charging dock. A blinking LED light on the speaker indicates that it is currently charging. The light will change to a solid color once it is fully charged. It can take up to 5 and a half hours to charge the speaker depending on what battery level you commence the process at. This time is likely so long because of how long the battery life is.

UE Megaboom 3 Software App

You can download an additional app on your phone for your speaker. The app provides many useful features for Megaboom 3. For example, the Party Up feature allows you to connect to as many additional Ultimate Ears speakers as you want. This can be used if you are using the speakers for a very large party or if you want a surround sound system.

An additional feature is a Musical Alarm which can be used to wake you up with the song or playlist of your choice. You can also utilize the customizable EQ feature to alter the mids, highs, and lows of the equalizer to your preference. Finally, there is the Remote ON/OFF feature that allows you to toggle your speaker without moving an inch.

Pros.

  • Massive battery life.
  • Good sound quality and vocals.
  • Waterproof with additional durability.
  • Has an app with many useful features.

Cons.

  • Very heavy for a portable speaker.
  • No wired connection.
  • Poor sound quality for intense bass songs.
