How To Choose A Security Camera System For Your Home

How To Choose A Security Camera System For Your Home

We will be looking at some important security camera buying guides, this is because there are tons of security cameras out there, and knowing the right one to buy is very important. This article will cover some of the basic guides regarding choosing a camera system that will assist you with enough information to make a well-informed choice to avoid getting any surprises when you purchase the camera system. We have the complete details on what to look for in home security camera, you can read that also.

How to choose a security camera (Wired vs Wireless Camera)

The general information or know-how that involves most security cameras out there and how to choose one include:

Resolution

When we talk of resolution this includes 720p, 1080p, and 4k resolutions. But one thing you should take into consideration is the megapixel value, most security camera manufacturers don’t usually display this information, but I advise contacting them asking what the megapixel value is. From my research, I realize that some of these cameras have one to two megapixels, and usually fall into two megapixels. Even though on the packaging it may say 1080p picture quality and the picture may be very poor, this is because the camera may just be a one-megapixel camera.

Megapixels in a camera are not enough to guarantee the camera will have better picture quality.

Lenses, image sensors, and processing algorithms

These three things together help to improve the picture quality especially if you are looking for a camera with zoom features. In this case, you are better going for a camera with optical zoom, the digital zoom is also ok but not as good as optical zoom. With the optical zoom you can zoom in quite a lot and also see and view more details, this is very important to keep in mind.

Microphone and speakers

Some security cameras also have a built-in microphone that records video footage as well as audio. You may be thinking this is useful, and yes it is, some security cameras can send you alerts if it picks up some noise. But this could be just some decibels or at a certain level, this automatically sends out a notification once it detects motion or noise. As well as the microphone you could decide on a speaker as well, this can be a two-way speaker camera so when someone comes close to the camera you can speak and listen to them. The downside here is that if they are a bit far from the camera, the sound quality can be poor. When you have background noise, this can also affect the quality of sound you get. With this feature, you are better off speaking to anyone inside the property or very close to the camera to hear them.

Storage

Some of these cameras also have storage systems like the micro SD card slots which you just have to put in the micro SD card then it records any footage. So if you have a Wi-Fi camera and the connection is lost the camera will still record and stored it on the SD card. If you have a base station the camera will record directly into the base station. The advantage of having a base station is that if the camera gets stolen or damaged like people always do, the footage remains in the base station. The base station is usually inside the property somewhere nobody will see it.

You can also go for a security camera with cloud-based storage, but you need an internet connection for this, you need stable internet for this, you can easily access the recording from anywhere even if the camera gets stolen or damaged. You will also need a compression algorithm to record, this compresses the video data, you need this format H.264 because it has a good amount of compression and it gives you more data on your storage system.

Also, use a camera that supports ONVIF (network video interface forum, this gives you a generic interface for applications so you don’t need to use the camera app. You can use a generic app on any device like a mobile phone or computer which you can directly connect to the camera. This requires you to enter an IP address, username, and password. You may require software or you may not be able to connect remotely to the camera.

Battery-powered

When using a battery there are things to remember, you have some options like a standalone camera.

A standalone camera like the energy camera uses an internal battery which can also be connected to a solar panel so the battery remains charged. Some of these cameras use a PIR sensor so when there’s an activity the PIR sensor activates the camera to start recording. What happens here is that the camera is not on or recording only when there is an activity. But the downside is that it can miss the first seconds of things happening. Another option is the base station battery which is connected inside the property to keep the recording going.

Wi-Fi cameras

Some of the Wi-Fi security cameras use 2.4 gigahertz wi-fi and some use 5 gigahertz. These WiFi cameras also have an SD card to record, if the Wi-Fi signal gets disrupted the recording will still be on. The good thing with WiFi cameras is that it is easy to set up and running, but you will need a power plug to plug it in. With the outside security cameras, you will need an outdoor power source or run a cable into the house through the window which does not look nice. Another option is a complete CCTV system with a Wi-Fi base that should be close to the base station and away from any interference so nothing blocks the signal while recording. Things like a wall or objects can restrict signal if you are using Wi-Fi cameras.

A wired security camera system

With the wired security camera systems, it is easy to set up but requires to have some sort of power over ethernet (PoE), and you do have to plug it nearby.
